This week Catherine Garceau joined us to talk about EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and tapping, a self-administered healing technique that’s growing in popularity. Catherine is an Olympic Bronze medalist and author of “Swimming Out Of Water,” her deeply personal story of self-discovery and healing. Trained in tapping techniques, Catherine is passionate about sharing her story of dealing with physical and emotional illness, the unconventional path that she took to heal herself, and how you can incorporate her methods into your own wellness plan.
What is Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?
According to the Official EFT website, “Emotional Freedom Technique, or EFT (often known as Tapping or EFT Tapping), is a universal healing tool that can provide impressive results for physical, emotional, and performance issues. EFT operates on the premise that no matter what part of your life needs improvement, there are unresolved emotional issues in the way. Even for physical issues, chronic pain, or diagnosed conditions, it is common knowledge that any kind of emotional stress can impede the natural healing potential of the human body.”
Emotional Freedom Technique, also called tapping, was developed by Gary Craig in the early 1990’s as a way to make energy flow manipulation accessible to everyone without the need for a trained acupuncturist. Catherine explains, “Emotional Freedom Technique… is in the field of energy psychology, meaning that it’s a form of psychology, but we’re also hitting, in some form, on the energetic system to basically unlock stored memory, negative charges, or stagnation in the emotional system.” She further explains, “Instead of putting needles, like in acupuncture, we’re actually reusing our own points, our own fingers, to tap on these points, gently, that helps to activate that actual energy flow.” It’s a self-administered therapy, and it’s this very accessibility that is part of the beauty of tapping, which:
- Costs you nothing to implement.
- Doesn’t require formal training to learn.
- Is self-empowering, no therapist required.
- Can be used as a tool to assist with a range of issues, be they physical, emotional, or performance based.
Using the “Official EFT” tapping method, Catherine demonstrates that by combining focused phrases with light stimulation of specific meridian points on the body, we can work to release “stuck” energy, what she and Craig call “zzzzzts.”
Studies have shown that tapping has measurable benefits on the body, most especially in the area of hormone stimulation, regulation (driving down cortisol levels), and stress reduction. Positive effects have been demonstrated in cases of:
- Psychological trauma, stress, anxiety, including PTSD1
- Mental disorders, including depression2
- Chronic pain (helps reduce pain perception & severity)3

Catherine stresses that the key to developing a personalized tapping sequence is to focus on a single variable and “the bare emotions” (i.e. a single negative emotion like embarrassment, a single physical issue like back pain). She explains, “The point of being specific and going back to the specific events is really key at getting immediate and lasting results.” Targeting each trauma, be it emotional or physical, separately brings more focus to your tapping, and so increased benefits.
How Often You Should Tap
You can actually reach for a tapping sequence whenever you need it. EFT tapping can be useful both for expelling negative energy from previous trauma, and in the moment when pain or anxiety is rising. Give the pain or trauma a number rating from 0 to 10, and use tapping to help bring that number down. EFT can be very useful as a tool that you can use to work on long term issues and when you’re in the middle of experiencing pain or anxiety.
As a daily exercise, Catherine suggests that you make time for tapping at least once daily. Ten to fifteen minutes is all that’s needed. Bedtime is a great time to incorporate tapping into your schedule. Working to release pent up energy may even help you sleep better!
Catherine also shows how to bring the spiritual element into a tapping sequence by adjusting your wording and adding spiritual energy. EFT truly is an inclusive set of techniques. Regardless of your beliefs, tapping can be adapted to your personal needs. You make it work for your unique self. “There’s no wrong way of doing tapping,” Catherine says, “You will always feel kind of good in your body after.”
We’ve spent a lot of time recently focusing on emotional health, and the crucial role that it plays in True Cellular Detox and Healing™. The body systems that govern our physical, mental, and emotional well-being are not separate. Imbalance in one can wreak havoc on the other. We’ve seen time and again in our practice situations where a client’s healing journey has stalled. They’re doing all of the right things in terms of diet, detox, and physical exercise, but they’re still having a problem. When these cases occur, analyzing the emotional pathways is one of the avenues that we explore together to see if there is a block. Hanging on to negative energy and emotional trauma can halt self-healing in its tracks. Even those of us who don’t feel deeply traumatized can often benefit from emotional detox. The tapping techniques that we’ve discussed may prove to be a useful, self-empowering tool for supporting with emotional detox and can bring about real results when used in conjunction with my Multi-Therapeutic Approach to cellular health and vitality.
