Modern science is always offering us new, innovative ways of understanding what is going on inside our human bodies. Today we are going to explore what Viome testing is, as well as my own personal reviews of the test. You will learn what Viome testing is, how it works, how much it costs, and how I feel about the overall value of the test.
What is a Viome Test?
Epigenetics is the study of bacteria, fungus, and viruses that live in and around us, and how they influence us at the cellular level. The more we can learn about these organisms, the more we can understand the way that they are impacting the expression of our DNA for the better or worse. Our microbiome has a profound impact on so many different factors that contribute to our overall health, including:
- Digests food
- Can impact our mood
- Makes essential nutrients
- Regulates appetite
- Controls immune system
- Controls metabolism
- Changes genetic expression
Although our genetic code is passed down and remains fixed throughout our lives, our microbiome is always in flux, and varies widely from person to person. This is where the Viome test comes in! Viome’s new technology came out of Los Alamos National Lab, and allows us to look at the bacteriophage inside our guts and blood (the viruses that impact our bacteria and microorganisms). For the first time, we are able not only to examine the organisms impacting our genetic expression, but the Viome test results also come with a detailed analysis of what this means for our health, and recommendations on how to optimize our individual diet.
The tests can determine deficiencies or if one’s body is unable to function properly in ways that haven’t been tested before, discovering answers to questions like:
- Can the body create vitamin B6 efficiently?
- Is it able to adequately absorb vitamin D from the sun?
- How much bad bacteria is currently in the body?
There is an interplay between our genes, our gene expression (called epigenetics), our bacterial burden (both good and bad), and our viral and bacteriophage load. Collectively, all of this comprises our microbiome, and it’s like a fingerprint. Each of us has a unique microbiome borne out of what we inherited from our parents and ancestors and the impacts of how we live today (environmental factors).
Taken together, these variables affect how we’re meant to eat. This is an important concept, as our planet has become globally integrated in many ways, including food availability. This is fantastic, and delicious; however, it can cause confusion with knowing how best to feed our bodies. A lot of what comprises our optimal diet comes from our own ancestors, and how they ate. Their inner microbiomes developed to handle their diet, and that was passed onto us genetically, and through passage of bacteria, viruses, etc from our mother. Our external environment further influences our microbiota, and sometimes not in our best interest. There is not one perfect diet for everyone on the planet, and the Viome test enables you to see how your lifestyle is working for you, in real time.
Gut Health and Viome Testing
There are approximately 40 trillion microorganisms living in your gut. These microbes perform countless tasks, including the role of being essentially gatekeepers to your body. Until something has passed through the tight junctions of your gut- it is still considered “outside” your body Once it passes through, it enters the bloodstream, and begins to either help or harm your health. An unhealthy microbiome is connected to multiple chronic conditions, including obesity, diabetes, Parkinson’s, coronary artery disease, Alzheimer’s, psoriasis, lupus, and autism. By working with the data and recommendations of your own personal Viome test results, you learn how to optimize your diet and lifestyle to help your microbiome thrive.
How Viome Testing Works
Thanks to modern technology, microbiome testing is a simple process. Samples are collected at home and completed with a single pinprick, stool or urine sample. You do not have to go to a lab or have any blood-work.
Unlike a DNA test where only one is needed, Viome testing is not a one-time test. This is a monthly subscription, and as you change your diet/ lifestyle and the body adapts, the microbiome is studied and the diet/ lifestyle is changed again accordingly. This is done to maximize your microbiome and help them attain the good health you desire.
The old school microbiome testing that predates Viome is called “16S sequencing,” a method that identifies a fraction of the microbes, does not determine the microbe functions, lacks the functional data to make any actionable advice, and in fact is highly unreliable (two identical samples can yield different results). Viome testing uses what is called a “metatranscriptome sequencing”, which identified all the bacteria and other living organisms in your gut, is able to actually identify their individual activities, and because of their high resolution understanding of the species, strains, and their roles- can make specific actionable recommendations on how your guts microbiome can be optimized.
How Much Does Viome Testing Cost?
Previously, this type of testing was not available to the general public. Single tests were very expensive, and could be upwards of $25,000 for a single test! In other forms of treatment, people will pay a hefty fee for one test, but can’t afford to go back for a follow-up. This is unfortunate because that second (or third) visit is critical to see if there was any progress and if adjustments to treatment should be made.
With microbiome tests, it’s important to get re-tested regularly to get concrete feedback on your health efforts. Viome offers a subscription rate of 99$/ month or 999$/year, that provides you with four tests per year (one every three months). Registrants also receive a health companion app that can used on their mobile device. Features of the app include:
- Clients will see their results and diet recommendations;
- Track their diets, sleep patterns, stress levels and other markers;
- Interact with others in the Viome community;
- Compare results and offer encouragement and support to other users.
Reviewing Viome: Is it Worth It?
I truly believe Viome will revolutionize the way people are treated and transform healthcare as we know it. Our needs are so individual, and using a microbiome testing like Viome enables you to see the progress you’re making and which areas of your diet and lifestyle need to be adjusted. Our needs change with time, and the Viome test is able to identify what is and isn’t working, and makes concrete recommendations to optimize your health.
The clients I work with are prescribed my Cellular Healing Diet, but this umbrella diet plan always requires adjustment to find what truly works for the individual. Using Viome test results enables us to use more than trial and error, it gives a clear roadmap for bioindividual nutrition. When we work with Viome, my clients see results much faster.
Viome testing is in high demand, but a special priority access code is available to my readers at: www.viome.com/tcd. You can get priority access to your results by using the code: TCD. Long gone are the days of guesswork when it comes to what your body needs to thrive, Viome is the future!
Unlike your DNA, your microbiome is in constant flux. Viome testing allows you to examine the ecology of your body and adjust your diet and lifestyle to support your individual needs. By subscribing to their program, you can test your progress every 3 months and continuously get recommendations for your individual needs. The test is simple and done at home, which makes this modern tool an incredible and easy way to tailor your habits to your body’s actual needs.
