The Best Bone Broth: The benefits of this ancestral beverage run deep, and we are going to get into not only the benefits but also the story behind our favorite bone broth company: Kettle & Fire. Justin Mares is the co-founder of Kettle & Fire Bone Broth, the first shelf stable, 100% grass fed bone broth. He started Kettle & Fire with his brother Nick after neither of them could find quality, rich bone broth that was conveniently pre-made.

Check out our interview with Justin from Kettle and Fire
Justin and his brother Nick were CrossFit athletes, looking to optimize their performance. These brothers were told that bone broth might help speed up their lagging recovery time in the gym, so they started investigating into this “liquid gold” alleged miracle recovery drink.
They quickly found out that nutrient-dense bone broths provide the body with a host of minerals and proteins that are not available in the average healthy diet. Justin explains that despite having been on a paleo diet for 4 years prior to starting the company, his diet was still deficient in key nutrients.
“Being on a paleo diet, you’re eating a lot of organic veggies, grass-fed meats, pastured chickens,” he shares, “but even if you’re eating incredibly well, especially by American diet standards, you’re missing out on a lot of components like the collagen, amino acids, and these things that you can only get from organ meats and in bones, cartilage, and bone broth”.
The Best Bone Broth and Ketogenic Soups: Quality and Convenience
When Justin looked more into his diet, he realized that it was not optimized to support his level of physical activity, that his recovery time was lagging, and that his energy was too. As he did more research, he discovered the power that comes from eating nose-to-tail in generating a truly balanced, healthy body. Looking more at the way that our ancestors ate, he saw that kidney, liver, heart, brains, bone broth, were an integral part of our ancestors’ diets 100 years ago.
After trying to make it themselves rather unsuccessfully, the brothers turned to the shelves to buy some. However, living in rural Pittsburg, there was no quality bone broth for sale at the time.
The bone broth subject came up again when Nick tore his ACL and MCL, and after surgery was looking to speed up recovery. Justin turned to the online world on his quest to find a suitable bone broth and again, came up empty-handed. It wasn’t long before the brothers put two and two together and decided to fill the gap in the market, and create not only an incredibly accessible shelf-stable bone broth but also the highest quality bone broth on the market.
The Best Bone Broth and Keto Soups for Weight Loss: The Missing Nutrients
“The nutrient density of the broth is an ancient healing strategy that has such a profound impact on healing the gut and as a result, whole body health.”
When you consume bone broth, you’re ingesting a whole host of amino acids, including glucosamine, glycine, glutamine, gelatin, arginine, and proline, which are not present in the average healthy diet. These different amino acids, these different proteins, have been shown to help with digestion; they stimulate the production of stomach acid and bile, which helps breakdown and absorb the nutrients in your food. They also help seal the intestinal wall and make sure that cells can basically regenerate.
Glycine has been shown to clear out excess methionine, which is a big problem when you’re eating a lot of eggs and muscle meat, which is common on a paleo diet. There are some interesting studies that show how gelatin can actually attenuate, or basically suppress the effects of glucose consumption. Studies have demonstrated that consuming gelatin can reduce the impact of a glucose spike by 50%, which is powerful when you know that regular blood glucose spikes are related to a host of illnesses.
“Given that so much of the body is made up of collagen, of these different amino acids that are the building blocks of good health, it’s something that I care very much about,” Justin shares.
The Best Bone Broth and Keto Soups for Weight Loss: More Than The Sum Of Its Parts
Although it’s nice to break down food into its nutritional benefits, the Kettle & Fire boys don’t actually believe it’s as simple as that. Justin shares that he is generally skeptical about any reductionist approaches to nutrition and that the benefits of bone broth go far beyond simply collagen.
“I’m not really one for supplements… they may help to a degree, but we’ve been through this cycle hundreds of times before where people make reductionist assumptions like with the acai berry, or resveratrol. They pull out the one compound and ingest it, expecting it to fix all their problems. Historically, that has a horrible track record of being effective whatsoever.”
The synergy of ingredients works in ways that our food scientists cannot fathom because the interaction of different minerals and vitamins of a whole food go far beyond taking all the ingredients as separate supplements. Collagen supplements are useful up to a point, but nothing beats the whole food version. It’s a whole food, whole system approach.
The Best Bone Broth and Ketogenic Soups: Regenerating the Body with Broth
Flooding the body with these missing nutrients with a whole food broth has a healing effect on the whole body. Justin shared the story of a 90-year-old woman. After drinking our bone broth every day for six weeks, she had such a reduction in joint pain that she was able to walk without her walker. Another customer thought that at 50 years old, the pain was just an inevitable part of aging; but is now able to ride his 30 miles on a bicycle again without pain, like in his youth.
Regular consumption of bone broth will have a profound influence on regenerating your gut, hair, skin, nails, joints, and bones. Collagen is one of the building blocks of your body, and so introducing it into your diet daily unlocks your potential in ways that a healthy diet alone cannot achieve.
The Best Bone Broth and Ketogenic Soups: Kettle & Fire
Not all bone broths are created equal. As you know by now, we are always in search of the best. Food can be medicine, but it can also be poison. You see, bone broth requires the slow simmering of bones. Over time, this extracts the nutrients (vitamins, minerals, amino acids) from the bones, turning the water into a nutrient-rich broth. The quality of the bones matters profoundly. A pasture-raised animal who lived out in the sunshine and grazed on fresh grass (that hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides) stores all that goodness in its bones. However, if the cow was fed GMO grain, spent its life indoors, consumed pesticides or was injected with hormones and antibiotics: these harmful substances will also be stored in their bones.
The Best Bone Broth and Keto Soups for Weight Loss:
The quality of the broth is as good as the lifestyle that the animal led.
Kettle & Fire is like nothing else on the market because they do a couple of things differently. If you walk down any health food grocery store, you’ll probably see multiple organic bone broths on the shelves… but the competitors often sell bone broth paste cut with apple cider vinegar- not made using actual bones. The tell-tale sign: when you pop a bone broth in the fridge overnight it should firm up. This is due to the high levels of collagen and gelatin that occur in truly slow cooked broths.
Unlike their competitors, Kettle & Fire not only source the highest quality ingredients (all organic ingredients, with bones from 100% grass fed, grass finished, pasture-grazed cattle… which are not easy to source, by the way) but also have genuinely slow cook times. Their 20-24 hour simmers are about 10x longer than the competitors. Justin shares, “we have the extraordinarily high sourcing quality, that, occasionally, can be challenging from a price standpoint”.
The Best Bone Broth and Ketogenic Soups: It Does not Oxidize
The last piece that brings it all together for Kettle & Fire is that unlike some of the frozen bone broth companies, they wanted a bone broth that was truly convenient. Kettle & Fire was the first company to launch a 100% shelf stable bone broth. They take the quality ingredients, the long cook times, and then we package it using roughly $6 million worth of packaging equipment that ensures that without any additives, and without any preservatives! An unopened package of their broth remains shelf stable for about 2 years. They remove the air from the product and thus it cannot oxidize.
“That’s kind of our whole process and what makes us unique, convenient, and I think the healthiest and best-tasting bone broth out there,” Justin shares proudly.
And the quality shows! In a recent study conducted in an independent lab, Kettle & Fire’s broth had a whopping 319 times more collagen than their biggest competitors!
The Best Bone Broth and Ketogenic Soups: How Much To Reap The Benefits?
With bone broth, the key is consistency over quantity. You want to incorporate it into your daily life as much as possible. The guys from Kettle & Fire suggest a cup of broth 3-5 times per week, as a minimum. Ideally, you want to be drinking one cup per day for 3-4 weeks to notice serious benefits. Some people like to fast using bone broth, this can be a great way not only to do a longer fast but also just as a tool to get you through your daily intermittent fasting! And you don’t have to drink it straight up; broth is a great base for soups and stews, you can use it as a base for gravy as well.
I challenge you to add bone broth and ketogenic soups for weight loss to your diet every day for a month, and experience the benefits for yourself!
