Multiple Chemical Sensitivity is probably the most misunderstood set of symptoms out there. When I was sick, I said I would rather have cancer. It is probably better known as environmental illness or “tilt,” but what it boils down to is intolerance to chemicals. I had debilitating chronic fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, and a whole host of unexplainable symptoms, but the most maddening part was probably the MCS. I still have certain sensitivities today to certain chemicals, such as cologne or other fragrances, but now it will only affect me for a half hour or so. It used to be days after a chemical exposure before I could leave my home. It really is a puzzle, but we have put together some of the pieces. One of these is diet, and I have a specific diet with which I treat MCS and the things that go along with it. That is the Cellular Healing Diet. This is designed to reduce inflammation of the cell, promote cellular regeneration, and regulate hormones. Toxins also play a big part in this disease. There are at least seven categories of toxins that we know fire something called the NO/ONOO cycle, which was popularized by Martin Pall. Nerve stress is also a factor. Martin Pall also talks about something called “NMDA,” which is the most excitatory neurotransmitter in the brain and mostly located in the upper cervical spine. In 2005, there were studies released showing that people developed chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia after car accidents. At the time, we did not understand the etiology, but today we do thanks to Martin Pall’s work. We know that these NMDA receptors become overstimulated and are led into an oxidative inflammation cycle. Deficiencies also play a role. Most people think of vitamin deficiencies, but it’s actually due more to antioxidants and glutathione deficiencies. Glutathione Is your body’s strongest antioxidant and most people are deficient today. In this country, the older you get, the lower your glutathione level becomes, and I believe this is due to the level of toxicity in our environment. We also want to look at hormones, and really find the source of hormone dysregulation. Most often, it is induced by toxicity or nerve stress.
Everything really boils down to healing at the cellular level. There are two theories on this which we have combined to give a better etiology. The first is called the “bucket” theory. This theory states that we are bio accumulating toxins, and once we accumulate so many, our “bucket” becomes full and overflows, which is when we start showing symptoms. The second is the NO/ONOO cycle of inflammation and oxidative stress. You can learn more about this in my book, The Cellular Healing Diet. Please share your story!
