What is Diet Variation? Understanding Feast and Famine Cycles

what-is-diet-variation

If you've been following me for a while, this concept won't be new to you. Diet variation has nothing to do with eating a variety of different foods, but rather how much food you're consuming; more specifically, it's engaging in feast-famine cycles.

This concept isn't new, bodybuilders have discovered it as a way to break through fat loss/ muscle gain plateaus, using cheat days. I honestly discovered it out of desperation while trying to help a client who was insulin resistant and had very damaged hormones. We were trying to get her into ketosis, but it just wasn't working, and she had previously been on my Cellular Healing Diet, which didn't work for her either—she was weight-loss-resistant. Something magic started to happen though when I switched her back to the (higher carb) Cellular Healing Diet: all of a sudden; she began to lose weight. Her hormone sensitivity went up, and then when I got her back on a ketogenic diet, she started making ketones and actually got into ketosis. It was an AHA moment for me, realizing that:

The key wasn't in the either-or diet; it was in a combination of the two.

Diet variation is rooted in the way of life of our ancestors, who regularly went through periods of feast followed by periods of fasting (in between hunts). It's this dance between both spectrums of eating that allows our hormones to optimize, our body to heal, healthy weight loss, and so much more. The problem we're trying to break free from here is stagnation, which manifests itself on both ends of the spectrum: being stuck in feast or fast mode.

Stuck in Feast Mode

It's no surprise that in the last century, the drastic change in lifestyle has made food so accessible that we no longer have to think twice about getting it. Supermarkets and mini markets are always within arms reach, open 24/7. We live in a culture that revolves around meals (not to mention all the marketing). Food has become the centerpiece of our society.

Famine used to be built into life because a hunt would go badly—or war would make food scarce. Today, there is no mechanism forcing us to go without, and so most of the population is living in constant feast mode. This constant fed state drives inflammation because the body is either in rest and repair mode or growth mode. A steady influx of food means the body is always digesting and never really focusing on repairing itself. The cellular consequences are an increase in the risk of disease.

The Body Is Smart, It Will Adapt To Fast Mode Too

Although the majority of the American population is no doubt stuck in feast mode, I would be willing to bet that many of the people reading this are stuck in “fast mode.” “Fast mode” doesn't necessarily mean you're only fasting, but it also applies to a ketogenic diet (essentially, whenever the body is running on ketones). You can only take your carbs so low, for so long, before negative consequences begin to creep up.

When I first discovered keto, it worked for me in the beginning. When it stopped working, I lowered my carbs— and lowered them more, until I no longer could. It was at that point that my progress stalled and even started reversing itself: I was gaining belly fat on a practically zero carb diet. Not only that, but my insulin started rising!

What's going on here? Well, the body is incredibly smart, and when it gets used to running on ketones (fat) instead of glucose (sugar) for a long time, it will begin to store fat for future use. It thinks, “Okay, this is my fuel source, better stock up in case I need it in the future.” Being stuck in ketone-burning mode will also upregulate the gluconeogenesis function, whereby your body will start pumping out more insulin than if you were consuming carbs. I've seen it time and time again: someone on strict keto for too long will consume a carb refeed, and their insulin will actually drop. Not only that, but a sustained low carb diet blunts the insulin receptors, and we have begun to see insulin resistance happening as a result—on low carb diets!

Why Does It Work?

It has to do with adaptation. I've interviewed many scientists and experts on Cellular Healing TV, and one of these scientists is Krista Varady, Ph.D., and author of The Alternate Day Fasting has spent her career researching feast-famine cycling. Her studies demonstrate the power that alternate-day fasting (capped at 500 calories per day) has on hormones, weight loss, brain function, and disease reduction. Dr. Valter Longo saw the same benefits in his five-day fasting-mimicking diet. He noticed a generation of new stem cells, a decrease in excess body fat while preserving lean muscle mass, and maintenance of healthy levels of blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure.

When we vary the diet, hormonal changes take place as a result of forcing adaptation on the body. Similarly to exercise, if we stick to one same diet or training program for an extended period, the body will adapt and hit a plateau. We've seen the same adaptation success in the study of weight loss resistant mice, who were exposed to hot and cold therapy. The adaptation forced on the body by being exposed to cyclically hot to cold temperatures (like sauna and cold showers) enabled these mice to lose body fat finally.

When one style of eating is maintained for a long time, we begin to see imbalances that are not conducive to health and longevity. It can cause deficiencies (like a vegetarian diet) or can drive up inflammation (like a high protein paleo diet). Still, when we find balance and swing between high carb (feast) and low carb (fast) days, the body is continually adapting and becoming more resilient.

People are debating on what diet is best…. But what I'm saying is: they're all okay. The magic is in the change, forcing adaptation. That's the key.

Benefits of Diet Variation Include:

  • Loss of body fat
  • Increase of lean muscle mass
  • Improved cognitive function
  • Fights cancer
  • Fights diabetes
  • Fights cardiovascular disease
  • Reduces oxidative stress and inflammation

Are All Carbs The Same?

Look, the studies show that feast-famine cycles work even if you don't change your diet whatsoever. The alternate-day fasting study that Dr. Krista Varady did had people going back to their standard American diet on the non-fasting days, but I can't help but wonder how much better their results would have been if they opted for a healthy diet on feast days. The same goes for Dr. Valter Longo's fasting-mimicking study: apart from the five days of partial fasting, the patients could eat whatever they wanted. I always tell my clients to opt for the healthier types of carbs. Healthier being unrefined, preferably organic foods like yams, wild rice, squash, pumpkin, carrots, and fruit. If the only way you're going to implement these fast cycles into your life is by still being able to have pizza on the weekends, then start there. Still, over time you should try to clean up the diet because although the feasting is an essential aspect of the protocol, there are harmful effects that ensue when consuming GMOs, refined oils, flours, and sugars, hybridized foods, and pesticides/ herbicides.

You have to factor in your current state of health, allergies, and intolerances. If your hormones are damaged or your insulin resistant, stay away from the junk. If you're already in optimal health, you can get away with more junk, but if you care about living a long (and healthy to the end) life, you'll opt for healthy carbs too.

Types of Diet Variation: How to Implement It

There are three main ways you can implement diet variation in your life. Best choose the one that you can see yourself sustaining in the long run.

1. Seasonal Variation

Seasonal diet variation is a very natural process when you think of following a seasonal ancestral diet. There weren't many plants growing in the winter so that winters would be very ketogenic (animal protein and fats), and summers would be more abundant in vegetables and fruit, which is the higher carb cycle. So in the winter you can restrict your carbs and consume a moderate amount of protein and high fat to stay relatively keto, and in the summer consume those berries, yams, pumpkin, wild rice, and whatever else carbs you enjoy.

2. Monthly Variation

The monthly variation has been studied and is referred to as the “fasting-mimicking diet” spearheaded by Dr. Valter Longo. Participants were restricted to 500 calories (mostly from fat) for five days a month, and for the rest of the month, they could eat whatever they wanted. The results were astounding: weight management and metabolic health, autophagy, and stem-cell rejuvenation.

Another way of incorporating a monthly variation might resonate with the women out there, who feel a wave of carbohydrate/ chocolate cravings take over when they're nearing their menstrual cycle. We've had this conversation many times in my household, and how beneficial it can be actually to listen to your body's cravings! Keeping with a ketogenic diet the rest of the month, you can indulge in all those carbs one week a month and get all those diet variation benefits plus ease the symptoms you may be having during the massive hormonal shift that occurs when you menstruate.

 3. Weekly Variation

Weekly variation is great because it's easy to incorporate into your life. Cycling seasonally can be difficult because you get used to one style of eating; I know personally when I've played around with seasonal shifts, it feels very odd to make the switch to a daily higher carb diet. With weekly variation, you hop around between keto, fasting, and a carbohydrate reefed(s), and can tailor the days to suit your schedule. I like to keep my higher carb days for a Saturday or Sunday, and then depending on your goals and your current state of health; you can include one, two, or even three days of fasting on busier days (you won't even realize you aren't eating!).

There are so many options here, but these are three of the most typical weekly diet variation combinations I teach my patients:

5-1-1: five days keto, one-day fasting, one-day feasting.

4-2-1: four days keto, two days are fasting, one-day feasting.

3-2-2: three days keto, two days fasting, two days feasting.

Find a balance that works for you. If you're sick or healing from adrenal issues, be mindful of that and include more feast days. You might be the type of person who always wants to maximize benefits but trust me: easing into it will maximize the benefits. If you're a seasoned intermittent faster and have completed prolonged water fast, try for the 3-2-2 or the 4-2-1. Listen to your body, and find a method to vary your diet that can realistically fit into your lifestyle.

What is Cellular Detox & Cellular Cleansing?

Cellular Detoxes and cellular cleanses are extremely popular today and there are many options to choose from. While many people may be unsure which detox diet, cleanse or product is best for them, it’s important to understand how they work, and that a cellular detox and cellular cleanse is much more than just changing the diet, or doing a 10-day herbal cleanse or juice fast.

See below for quick links to each of the sections in this post:

What is Cellular Detox?

What is True Cellular Detox?

Cellular Cleansing Methods

What is Cellular Detox?

Cellular detox, also known as cellular cleansing, is a natural strategy that helps to remove waste products and harmful toxins from inside the cells of the body. This includes cellular remnants from toxic food, household cleaners, synthetic medications, air and water pollutants, and other molecular threats that build up in the cells and impair their functions.

When most think of a detox, they may envision a diet where they eat certain foods and eliminate others for a specified period of time. By the end of the detox, a person expects to feel refreshed and energized, perhaps enjoying improved clarity of mind and weight-loss. While these are noble goals, changing your diet is only one part of cellular detox. This is where cellular cleansing and my system of True Cellular Detox™ come into play.

What is Cellular Cleansing?

The only truly effective and comprehensive type of detox is a cellular detox also known as cellular cleansing. Cellular cleansing is designed to remove harmful toxins from the body where they are causing the problem: at the cellular level. While many people focus on eliminating toxic food, which is important, but there are many other toxins that people encounter that are not food related. A cellular detox doesn’t just focus on removing toxic food; it looks at all the potential toxins a person encounters on a daily basis and aims to remove them as much as possible from the body and environment. Before a person begins a cellular detox, it’s important to know what the potential toxins are and where they originate.

Here are few common toxins many people encounter daily:1

For more on common toxins in our environment see my Cellular Healing TV episode and article here:

Prolonged exposure to these toxins may cause the following ailments:2

Many people feel the effects of these various toxins and do not realize what is the actual cause. As I always say, one must discover the root source of the problem, and once this is understood, a person can work to effectively remove many of these toxins from the body with a cellular detox. However, I do not suggest attempting detox on your own, especially if you’re struggling with a health condition that is affecting the quality of your life. To safely and effectively go through the detox process you need a trained practitioner trained who can coach you each step of the way. Many hire coaches to improve their golf or dating game, why not a coach to take your health to the next level? Good health is truly a precious gift, I know all too well.

What is True Cellular Detox?

True Cellular Detox is an approach to cellular detox developed by Dr. Daniel Pompa. The whole strategy is based on the ”5 Rs of True Cellular Detox and Healing,” five principles that help to significantly improve cellular function and support the body in healing itself. Thanks to this multi-component approach, the achieved cellular detox is deep, stable, and long-lasting, compared to other ”superficial” strategies like simple supplements or detox teas.

The 5 Rs of True Cellular Cleansing

Dr. Pompa’s True Cellular Detox is based on five principles that fit together like puzzle pieces. Each of them addresses just one important component of cellular cleansing, but together they reinforce one another and improve the healing effects manifold. As a result, this approach gives the body enough inner resources to heal itself and prevent future damage.

1. Remove the Interference

R1 is based on removing the primary source of toxins that enter the body. For some people, this could be eliminating a toxic mold from their home, while for others this would mean to detox the body from heavy metals like mercury and lead. Without removing the source of toxins, even the most sophisticated cellular detox strategy will feel like swimming against the current: exhausting and utterly ineffective.

2. Regenerate the Cell Membrane

A healthy cell membrane allows nutrients to enter the cell freely—but doesn’t prevent toxins and waste from leaving it. On the other hand, a damaged cell membrane triggers a state of ”lockdown” in the cell: nutrients can’t enter, and waste can’t be eliminated properly. As a result, the cell turns into a microscopic wasteland with impaired functions. Regenerating the cell membrane is essential for cellular cleansing that lasts.

3. Restore Cellular Energy

Nutrients that enter the cell reach its ”powerhouses,” the mitochondria. The mitochondria transform nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is basically cellular gasoline—the fuel on which every cell in every organ in the human body runs 24/7. Lacking ATP worsens inflammation, disrupts hormonal balance, leads to fatigue, causes brain fog, lack of focus, and impaired concentration. Restoring cellular energy is crucial to kickstart the body’s self-healing journey, since true healing is impossible without enough energy.

4. Reduce Cellular Inflammation

Systemic inflammation of the body’s cell membranes leads to impaired communication between the cells, decreased waste elimination, lacking energy production, and in the end—even more inflammation. Studies revealed that common sources of systemic cellular inflammation include dietary sugars and grains, unhealthy fats, heavy metals, and bio-toxins like the ones produced by molds. Soothing cellular inflammation is absolutely required to improve any health condition, regardless of the affected organ.

5. Re-establish Methylation

Methylation is a process through which the body ads tiny methyl groups (CH3) to its DNA. These methyl groups typically work like STOP signs that reduce the activity of the respective portion of your DNA. Healthy methylation is the body’s way of blocking bad genes from going into action. Toxins and waste products can impair the body’s natural methylation process—meaning it won’t be able to block bad genes effectively. As a result, impaired methylation leads to constant stress, hormonal imbalance, and a wide range of health conditions that get worse with each passing year. Restoring methylation allows the body to suppress unhealthy genes and support the best ones, leading to strong general health and improved overall wellbeing.

Cellular Cleansing Methods

Knowing what the various toxins are is half the battle. Once they have been identified, steps can be taken to treat them. Here are a few ways to begin cellular cleansing:

  1. Reduce your exposure to environmental toxins and EMFs. For more on this topic, please see the list of my Toxic Top 10 and my CHTV interview on EMF dangers.
  2. Eat foods that help your body remove toxins naturally and decrease the amount of processed, junk foods in the diet. Including “healthy” whole grains and excessive fruits. For more on my Cellular Healing Diet and a FREE 7-day menu plan, go here.
  3. Decrease the reliance on man-made, synthetic medicines and focus on natural remedies for ailments and illnesses. For more on helpful natural remedies read my article, “Natural Fever Remedies for Fever and Flu,” and shop online here.
  4. Incorporate my method of True Cellular Detox™ into your already healthy lifestyle. For more on this process, see my article and video here.

The average detox diet and cleanse lasts for a few days or weeks, but regular cellular cleansing, and using True Cellular Detox™ periodically, is a lifestyle change. Dramatic shifts in health may not occur overnight (though it’s possible), but cleansing at the cellular level is the only way to get real and lasting results in your health. If you are a certified natural health practitioner and are interested in integrating a true cellular detox system into your practice, please call 724.292.7673.

Another area of nutrition that has been attracting a lot of unscrupulous characters recently is immunity. Because marketers know that immunity products are hot, they’ve rushed out solutions that don’t really address one of the most important ROOT CAUSES of weak immunity. I’m talking about toxicity, of course… and there are many reasons why toxins can cripple immunity. FIRST, they can congest the liver—and the liver is a key organ, helping produce essential compounds that power your immune system. SECOND, toxins can drain your cells of energy… and your immune system MUST have cellular energy to function properly. These are just a few of the reasons why people have been rushing to join our upcoming True Cellular Detox (TCD) Challenge Program

Because it’s THE most effective, in-depth cellular detox program available in the world today… and one of the most powerful pathways for restoring and strengthening immunity.

Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma: A Multi-Therapeutic Approach

Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma: A Multi-Therapeutic Approach

Trauma can come in many forms: chemical, physical, and emotional. The long term repercussions of the trauma in any of these three categories can be debilitating, if not processed and healed correctly at the time. Today we explore the connection between addiction, trauma, and cellular detox.

addiction and trauma

Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma: What Is An Addiction?

The word addiction can be rather triggering for people, not wanting to inflate or overstate their situation. Of course, there are ‘typical' addictions and patterns that we recognize universally, but the more nuanced or less obvious addictions can be just as harmful.

For this article and in the name of healing, we see addiction as any substance, habit, or general scenario that is repeated and leads to a negative outcome. This outcome can come from a broad category of things, including food, relationships, medications (pharmaceutical and natural), alcohol, technology, sex, and shopping.

The statistics about genuinely breaking addiction patterns are staggeringly low, somewhere between 3 and 5 percent. We believe strongly that this is because only the addiction itself is being examined, and not the underlying trauma.

The Link Between Addiction and Trauma

An addiction can become the solution to trauma for a few reasons, a major one being addiction as a coping mechanism. The limbic part of the human brain reacts to the fight of flight that is triggered during a trauma. If this stress reaction is isolated to a predator, like it was ancestrally, this dump of stress hormones was useful to run away. In modern times, these emotional traumas loop in our heads. The body will try to self-soothe by whatever means possible.

Various addictions trigger reward and pleasure centers in the brain. Whether it be the thrill of gambling, the pleasure response of delicious food or sex, or the disassociation that comes from drugs and alcohol– these various sensations numb the pain that stems from trauma. As our body adapts to the baseline, these addictions generally become more significant and more pronounced with time.

When addiction is dealt with on a superficial level, it is common that quitting one addiction leads to the rise of a new one. If someone stops drinking alcohol, the person might pick up smoking. If someone quits a smoking addiction, they may pick up a food addiction. When you don't adequately address the underlying trauma, one numbing habit is simply replaced with another.

A Multi-Therapeutic Approach to Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma

When we think of the word ‘detox,' it's often chemical detox that comes to mind. We think of the cellular detox with physical tools like zeolites, fasting, and herbs. Although this is a crucial part, and we will touch on it below, it is not the full story. Addressing detox from a multi-therapeutic approach ensures that you heal not only the physical body but also the emotional body.

Until we address the emotional side of trauma, there is no severing the habitual manifestation that it has as our various addictions. Dealing with the trauma is what breaks an individual free from the need to self-soothe through these multiple addictions.

Cellular Detox

We genuinely believe that the body wants to heal itself when obstacles are removed. Unfortunately, due to the modern lifestyle and degrees of toxicity– that natural desire our body has to heal itself requires a little assistance.

Toxins are essentially substances that are harmful to our living bodies. Technically anything can become toxic given the wrong dosage. More complications occur when we factor in the short term vs. long term implications of the exposure to toxins.

Toxins hurt your body in various ways. They begin by placing a burden on the excretory system that is responsible for ridding these toxins from your body. Your excretory system is comprised of your lungs, digestive tract, skin, kidneys, and liver.

Cellular detox comprises of a few steps:

  1. Remove toxic foods from your diet, and replace them with cleansing, whole, nourishing, and organic foods
  2. Remove toxins from your home, and replace them with non-toxic alternatives (this includes personal care products, cleaning products, and even the materials that make up your furniture, cookware, etc.)
  3. Implement a cellular detoxifying protocol best suited to your individual needs

Mindset

Our model for healing the physical body also translates to the mind and these beings with mindset. When it comes to recovery, this includes removing an individual's attachment to the addiction. Without shifting the mindset, there will be a continual hormonal looping when it comes to the pleasure response achieved through the addiction.

Our mind plays a crucial role in triggering the hormones in our body, and by repeating the same patterns over and over, we can become addicted not only to the activity itself but also to the hormonal response it provides.

Whether that be physical-chemical responses like an addiction to adrenaline and cortisol or a mental-emotional response like guilt or shame, we start to program our baseline to need these sensations to feel normal, and by addressing mindset, it can begin to shift us out of these patterns.

The key here is the why.

Connecting with the why helps reinforce a new habit, by knowing deeply and continually reminding ourselves of the intention. Finding a positive, genuine connection to the reason behind the need for a change can help reprogram our neurons to fire in a new way. It's essential to do this from a place of self-love and compassion. We don't want to reinforce any feelings of shame or guilt along the journey towards healing.

In practice, this may look like tackling food addictions by shifting the mindset from “I need to lose weight. I need to eat less and exercise more because I hate the way I look in the mirror” can instead become: “I want to honor my body in this life. I want to support it by nourishing it with real food and experiencing the gift that I have to move and sweat”.

By taking the mindset out of a negative, self-hate loop and into a positive, self-loving mindset, we can start to heal the physical and emotional body.

It can be helpful to include something that is greater than you in your why. This something can be finding health and wellness for your children's sake, or your spouse, your friends. It can be finding mental clarity so you can live out your life's purpose, or to be an example to your community.

Childhood Trauma: Connection

We have a deep-rooted ancestral need for connection. The way that we were raised plays a huge role in shaping the way we see the world. Most of these neural patternings are fully formed before the age of seven. The human attachment and connection we receive as children shape how safe we feel in the world.  Attachment patterns can even be passed down intergenerationally.

When babies and children don't get enough physical touch and a general sensation of feeling safe and supported– this becomes a common source of addiction as adults. We self-soothe with drugs, alcohol, gambling, or food as a way to fill the void.

Thankfully, there is a wide range of modalities that can help break those patterns and introduce new neural pathways to heal the trauma.

This neural path is called neuroplasticity; it is the brain's ability to change the physical structure and functioning of itself in response to your life experiences, repeated behaviors, emotions, and thoughts. Working with a coach can be useful to help reinforce the mindset, actionable habits, implement forgiveness practice for those who have hurt or unintentionally shaped you in this way, and apply techniques like EMDR to help reprogram the brain.

Neuroplasticity is like exercise for the brain. Knowing that when you lift weights, your body adapts and gets stronger is paralleled by the ability to think your way to a new pathway, which manifests itself as a new way of operating in the world.

Reframing: Pain to Purpose

When we explore our childhood and the traumas that we have been exposed to either directly or transgenerationally, it is useful to reframe them as gifts we have been given in this life to fuel our purpose. Pain is a universal experience, and by taking something that hurts you and overcoming it, this often becomes a driving force for your life's purpose.

Whether it be physical abuse, a debilitating autoimmune condition, or even just the trauma of witnessing parents divorce at a young age: you can take the lessons you learned through this trauma and help others overcome and navigate their experience.

Turning your pain into purpose can look like so many different things. As a practitioner, Dr. Pompa helps guide his patients back to health using the same techniques and strategies he developed healing himself and his family. For you, it may look like using art or music as therapy. It may look like becoming a preschool teacher and showing unconditional love to your students, or it may even look like working as a cashier and showing genuine interest and undivided attention to each customer. The things that you lacked or were traumatized by as a younger person can become the jet fuel to help you be your best self: leading by example.

Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma: Heart Math

During stress and negative emotions, when the heart rhythm pattern is erratic and disordered, the corresponding pattern of neural signals traveling from the heart to the brain inhibits higher cognitive functions. This pattern limits our ability to think, remember, learn, reason, and make effective decisions. HeartMath technology offers a new approach to improving emotional wellbeing. The technology enables a change in your heart rhythm pattern to create physiological coherence.

Heart signals have a significant effect on brain function – influencing emotional processing as well as higher cognitive faculties such as attention, perception, memory, and problem-solving. In other words, not only does the heart respond to the brain, but the brain continuously responds to the heart.

The device itself is so simple and is comprised of a small tool that provides biofeedback for your heart rate, and makes recommendations on types of breathwork that will help stabilize your heart rhythm patterns. With live feedback, you can see your heart rate pattern develop a more coherent rhythm in real-time.

IV Therapy

IV therapy is an instrumental bridge to help support the body during times when absorption may be low, or during times the body is experiencing higher degrees of stress than usual. Through IV therapy, the body is getting 100% absorption directly into the circulatory system. Bypassing the stomach helps provide direct support to the body.

Vitamin IV's are common, but the latest innovations in IV therapy have widened the scope of injections to some pretty incredible substances. Some of our favorites include:

  • NAD: has been shown to promote maintained mental clarity, focus, protect mental clarity, and protect against neurodegenerative diseases for a healthier and happier quality of life
  • Phosphatidylcholine: is being used to treat a wide range of ailments, including high cholesterol, liver disease, chest pain, fat embolism, and fatty plaque deposits in arteries.
  • Glutathione: is a potent detoxifying agent that supports many systems of the body and provides incredible support for the liver. The liver metabolizes out toxins, so giving it that added support is crucial when it comes to health.

Detoxing From Addiction and Trauma: Nutrition

Food is the building block of your physical body, but it also has a profound impact on our emotional body. Cultivating a healthy relationship with food requires a mindset of self-love, rooted in a desire to nourish your body and promote good health, both physical and mental.

When it comes to nutrition, there is no linear way that works for every single individual.

A few key concepts that work for the majority of the population include:

  • Pasture-raised animal protein and fats (beef, chicken, lamb, and goat)
  • Wild seafood (particularly small fish like sardines, mackerel, and anchovies)
  • A wide range of organic vegetables, in season and preferably grown local
  • Low consumption of processed-foods (flours, oils, and sugars)
  • Proper preparation of food, including soaking, sprouting, and fermenting harder to digest ingredients
  • Eating within a restricted time window (intermittent fasting)
  • Using diet variation to promote metabolic flexibility (keto days, higher carb days, and water fasting days)
  • Sticking to spring water or filtered water as the primary source of hydration
  • Mindful consumption of caffeine
  • Avoiding alcohol

Yoga

Yoga is a profound practice, not only for the body but also the mind. It helps cultivate various techniques that translate profoundly to healing the mind and body. Mentally, yoga teaches surrender and equanimity: the abilities to flow with life and learn to observe what is as opposed to what you wish was happening. Physically, it stretches the muscles, fascia, and connective tissues: loosening and releasing stored trauma from the physical body.

Having an intention to release old patterns and memories that are no longer serving can go a long way in your yoga practice. Imagining every inhale like a breath of new energy and prana, while each exhale is a deep surrendering and release of old patterns, programming, and trauma.

Summary

Addictions are substances, habits, or general scenarios that are repeated and lead to a negative outcome. Although they are often addressed as individual and isolated problems, it's not until we examine the roots of trauma that we can truly break the neurological patterning that manifests itself as an addiction. Dealing with trauma requires a multi-therapeutic approach, including the likes of cellular detox, mindset, IV therapy, nutrition, and yoga. By healing the trauma, whether it be big or small, we can let go of the self-soothing coping mechanisms. We can begin to cultivate healthy patterns as adults.

Raw Feeding for Dogs: The Best Diet for Your Fur Babies

Raw Feeding for Dogs: The Best Diet for Your Fur Babies

A guest post, written by my wife, Merily Pompa.

Raw Feeding for Dogs: Those of us who have fur babies and love them with an irrational love will do almost anything to keep them healthy and happy. So much of the food on the market today is toxic and filled with fillers and preservatives, artificial colors, as well as high fructose corn syrup, benzoyl peroxide, which is a bleaching agent used in flours and cheese.

Raw feeding for dogs

Not always are the preservatives listed that are in the ingredients even though the ones that are in the food must be listed—confusing and crooked, I know. So if there is chicken, for example, or fish, that doesn’t mean there are no preservatives in those ingredients, even though not listed.

Raw Feeding for Dogs: Most Processed Dog Food is Denatured with Preservatives Added

Other preservatives are synthetic such as BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), or ethoxyquin. The role these fats play is to prevent rancidity and extend shelf life in the foods for approximately a year. Their safety is questioned by the scientists (who usually understand the dangers far in advance of the FDA recommendations) and for the savvy consumer (like myself). My rule of thumb is if it is on the ingredient list and cannot be pronounced, I do not buy it. I adhere to that not just for my furries, but for my humans as well.

To give one example, the preservative ethoxyquin, which came under scrutiny in the ’90s due to a rise in reproductive issues, skin allergies, and cancer and even organ failure, is far from what I would ever consider being an acceptable ingredient in their food options. Ironically, Monsanto was the company that conducted the tests, which revealed possible liver damage in dogs that were fed high levels of this preservative, which led to the FDA (in 1997) halving the previously allowable limit.

Instead of BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, look for natural preservatives such as Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols), and plant extracts. They still serve the purpose to preserve, just not for the length of time that the synthetics do. The workaround there is to look at the date on the bag. Be sure to buy products that fresh.

So What Can I Feed My Fur Baby?

The best way to avoid processed dog food and ensure you are choosing from the freshest and best products for your pets is to feed them raw. It is essential to know the companies that have the best reputation for being meticulous about the processing of their food. With raw feeding, there is always the option to make your own (which I do not) or buy from those companies.

A few of my favorites are Love Your Pet, Stella and Chewy’s, Primal, and Small Batch and Idahound. I have been feeding my pets exclusively raw since our now ten-year-old Goldendoodle was about 1 or 2 as he had digestive issues until I made that uncompromising switch. Before that, his microbiome (the combined genetic material of microorganisms in a particular environment which is as important as the genome) was hugely disrupted.

Raw Feeding for Dogs: What is the Best Diet for Dogs and Cats?

We determine what foods animals should eat, through observing what they eat in the wild. What if an animal has been taken out of the wild for some time, and this is impossible? The study of paleontology supports the fact that specific jaw structures, type of teeth as well as digestive tracts would best be suited to a carnivore diet. Dogs, as well as cats, have these characteristics. Therefore no other diet other than a raw diet would be the best. Pure carnivores still eat some roughage but not for the same reasons humans do, and it is a small part of the menu. Most of the reputable raw food producers consider this. Another reason to research companies who produce raw? You want to be sure that your little loves get the correct ratios of meat vs. roughage.

Some people who do not understand or have experience with raw feeding may claim that there are threats to human and dog health from bacteria in raw meat.

They also contend that there is an unbalanced diet that may damage health. Still, others claim if given for an extended period and that there is a potential risk for whole bones to increase the risk of choking, break teeth or cause an internal puncture. These concerns are simply untrue. I seldom give my dogs raw chicken bones…only because I buy their food. I do give them raw beef bones (mostly in the summer so that they can enjoy them outside).

One obvious response to the concern for the bacteria in the home is evident as who doesn’t clean their counters when they cook with raw meat or any other meat for that matter? It's always important to clean the space where food is prepared. In my decade of experience, I have never had an issue—not one—nor has anyone I know who feeds raw had any problems either.

Secondly, how do animals survive the wild and live long, healthy lives (exclusive of predator attacks) if they cannot eat what is available to them? As their caretakers, we can pick and choose what they eat, which ensures their best options within the category of raw. I even buy bone broth and add that as “the cherry on top.” Other great toppers include raw goat kefir, raw eggs, and raw sardines.

How many testimonies have you read of health transformations of pets (if searching the topic), which I feel is the most significant evidence of all to the power of a raw food diet? If not, that should be where this debate would begin and end as those who have implemented raw due to allergies, gut issues, skin issues, even cancer and have made the switch have overwhelmingly reported the benefits.

Whether your pet is struggling or you desire to lengthen their life span, I encourage you to consider this as your highest offense and weapon for their thriving and longevity.

Here is our (at the time) ten-year-old son wearing a gas mask to feed our dog!

Being a Conscious Pet Owner

Being a conscious pet owner is something I’ve been thinking about a lot. “Owning” a lifeform is a weird idea in the first place. These dogs are part of our family…they sleep in my kid’s beds and are always with us. When we travel, something feels off…the pack is not together. In the old days, the dogs would run down a rabbit and eat together. Then they bonded with humans and we’d hunt together. They’d help us and we’d give them their share of the “bounty.” It was a match made out of camaraderie and partnership- a true example of symbiosis.

Cats? They’d get the rodents for us- free food for them and disease-free barns for us. They’d bring us birds. Again- symbiosis at work. So what’s different today? If you live in an urban environment, there’s a lot that’s changed. The cat lounges in the living room and eats food out of a can. No mice being chased in the barn…Dogs? They get a walk or two a day and they watch us watching our phones. Boo. They eat synthetic kibble (no matter how much we pay for the good stuff) and get taken to special places for “exercise.”

It’s better than not getting it but, come on. Animals (and humans for that matter) evolved in the wild and are meant to be running around. Free play, exploration, and a diversified nutrient-dense diet is where we came from. So how can we approximate that kind of lifestyle for our pets today?

That’s the challenge.

Getting them out and active is key- no matter where you live. A couple of walks a day for dogs is the bare minimum. Climbing apparatus and free play for cats. These things are key. Animals need to move around. Their spirits are wild. We’ve seen what happens when we ignore that. They mirror us. Dogs get depressed. Cats get feisty. As they should…

Life is to be lived.

What about the food?

Short of feeding them live mice and rabbits, we need to approximate those diets for them. Not all kibble is created equal. Probiotics are now a thing for our pets. Why? Because they’re no longer eating the guts of an animal they just killed. I know it’s gross but that’s the reality. Cats and Dogs are carnivores. They’d inoculate a healthy microbiome by eating guts of a fresh kill. They never ate grains over the millennia. So why are those the main ingredients in pet food? Because it’s cheap.

There are places to save money and other places to invest in the health and happiness of our pets. Grains should not be in a pet’s diet. I spent several hours with Dr. Rob Franklin, a holistic veterinarian, discussing these items. He helped us put together a course called  “Healthy Pets” which is filled with wisdom about how to feed and care for our pets.

A key takeaway is that prevention is the name of the game. Keep them healthy and keep them moving. Get them the right supplements and avoid the crap diets. They will live longer, be happier, and thrive. In fact, it’ll likely cost you less in vet bills and hospitalization in the long run.

They are part of our families and need to be treated accordingly. They deserve health and happiness. I was never handed a “how-to” manual with my puppies yet I was in charge of their wellbeing the minute I put them in my car.

With the help of Dr. Franklin, that “How To” manual now exists. Check it out.

The Hidden Dangers of Mold Toxicity: A Silent Killer

The Hidden Dangers of Mold Toxicity: A Silent Killer This subject is an incredibly important topic because it is an ever-growing “missing piece” in the very complicated matrix of modern-day illness. Today we are going to talk about mold. Not the kind of mold that grows on food, but rather black mold: a biotoxic predator that is sweeping the nation and hiding behind our walls and floorboards.

mold toxicity

The Hidden Dangers of Mold Toxicity: A Silent Killer

Mold is an ever-increasing problem because modern ways of constructing buildings use drywall and wallpaper, which (as we will explore a little bit later) is the perfect storm to create a black mold infestation. Let’s dive in and explore the symptoms of mold toxicity, what to look for to properly diagnose mold infestation, and how to safely get rid of it in your home.

As we’ve touched on, the dangerous mold that we are discussing today is not the kind that grows on food left in the fridge too long. These biotoxic molds that take hold of our homes, hotels, or workspaces release a particular type of toxin called mycotoxin, which is a biotoxin that interferes with the body’s hormones and eventually takes a severe toll on whole-body health.

It can have a musky smell that you can recognize, but frequently it goes completely unnoticed. It is common in old hotels as well as newer office spaces, especially in damp locations. All it takes is some water (which could be dampness in the air or a leak in the pipes), and all of a sudden, the mold starts to grow indoors. There’s not necessarily visible mold; oftentimes, it’s behind the walls or the floorboards — a silent killer.

Some people are susceptible to mold.

Some people enter a space and immediately start feeling the symptoms: headaches, body aches, allergies, poor sleep. It’s estimated 1 in 4 people are hypersensitive to mold exposure. Whether or not you are one of those hypersensitive people, you do not want to be exposed to this stuff, because mold exposure is causing low levels of chronic stress that can build up over time and cause severe damage in the body.

The Symptoms

Mold toxicity is one of the most common things I see in my patients. They will begin to describe their symptoms, and within minutes, I can already tell: it’s mold. Mold toxicity is very hard to diagnose because the list of symptoms is so broad and complex. Many people get turned away from their GP’s because there are no specific tests available to diagnose it accurately. But as someone who has experienced it myself and seen so many patients recover from mold toxicity, I know it’s real.

The Symptoms of Mold Toxicity Include:

  • Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Depression
  • Panic attacks
  • Joint pain
  • Skin irritation (burning, itching, pain, ants crawling sensation)
  • Blurred vision
  • Chemical sensitivity
  • Allergies
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Postnasal drip
  • Water eyes
  • Food allergies
  • Asthma
  • Weight gain
  • Body odor
  • Light sensitivity
  • Noise sensitivity

Autoimmune Reactions

The low level underlying chronic stressor of mold toxicity can be that source of stress that’s slowly filling up your cup until some specific event triggers a full-blown autoimmune reaction. A common occurrence is during pregnancy. If a woman has been filling her cup up with these low levels of mycotoxin stress for years, and then falls pregnant, the led released from her bones (since bone density naturally reduces during pregnancy) can trigger a severe autoimmune reaction.

Another example of this low level of underlying stress is a subject we touched on recently at Health Hunters, and that is mercury (amalgam) fillings. We think these poisons don’t impact us because they are not hurting us straight away, but they are there slowly and silently stressing the body— until it breaks.

Mold Toxicity: My Experience

This subject is something I have experience with not only through my clients but in my personal (and recent) life. I had a blower go in my heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system that resulted in a condensation build-up, which filled up the pan, which eventually overflowed and started leaking. It took us about two days to notice because the HVAC was running non-stop, so when I went downstairs to check on the system, I saw a wet carpet.

I put fans on it immediately, and when I went back the next day to check on it, the wood was covered in fuzzy mold. When I got back from a trip, my daughter was complaining of knee pain (which she hadn’t had in a long time). My wife started to have pain in her hips, and I had fatigue and just felt “off.” We cut into the drywall to reveal about a quarter-inch thick of mold growing all over the place. We were by mold exposure.

It can go undetected.

It’s important to note that many people would never suspect that mold is at the root cause of their ailments. On the surface, we did everything right, pulled up the carpet, and let everything dry. But the mold was behind the boards, and although it was invisible, it was infesting the air and poisoning our bodies with biotoxic materials.

Drywall and paper are the perfect storms for mold because cellulose (found between the two) is food for the bacteria. All you need is a little moisture (or a leak), and you have yourself a mold infestation. This problem amplifies with how most modern buildings are sealed because of the lack of airflow traps in moisture (combined that with the drywall problem): biotoxic warzone.

What To Look For:

  • Before buying a house: ask about any past leaks and consider getting the house tested for mold. Homeowners do not have to disclose previous leaks, and so your new home may be infested with it before you ever move in.
  • Above 50% humidity: you’ve got mold. If you live in a humid area, it is imperative to have dehumidifiers. Also, keep the inside of the house below 50% humidity.
  • Paper on drywall (cellulose) is food for mold, all you need is the tiniest amount of water exposure, so being mindful of any “newer” types of buildings using drywall, which traps in humidity. Plus, the drywall paper, and you’ve got a perfect storm of mold.
  • Pay attention to how you feel in a new environment.
  • Whether it’s a hotel, a new office space: if you’re feeling symptoms all of a sudden, it might be mold lurking behind the walls or floors.

You may have to “fog” your space:

If there’s any leak, this is a surefire sign that mold is on the way. Make sure you properly dry all the affected areas within 24-28 hours, including under the floorboards and behind the walls. Preventatively I would also suggest using a natural chemical and fog space (see below for more on how to do that).

How To Properly Test

Test Yourself

  • VCS Test: vcstest.com is a visual contrast test that identifies possible mold exposure because one of the first nerves to get affected by mold is the optic nerve.
  • C4a: is a very accurate test you can get at the National Jewish Laboratories lab. They do multiple tests, including blood work, the VCS.

Test Your Home for mold toxicity

Your average mold testing or insurance company will not accurately diagnose mold infestation. Many companies only test for spores in the air. Since mold lurks behind walls and floors, their spores are hidden there as well. What is emitted into the atmosphere are mycotoxins, which do not register on a spore test.

A better option to test for mold toxicity is the ERMI Test. The ERMI tests bits of dust that have been vacuumed out of critical places (like behind the walls, the HVAC systems, and corners in the basement). This test is much more accurate in locating the spores. You can order one at survivingmold.com.

Another, even perhaps better tool, is mold dogs. Yes, dogs have been trained to sniff out the mold. They are an incredible tool to locate mold in your home or space. Hop on Google and find a business in your area.

I Found Mold, What To Do?

  1. Control the Humidity: Controlling humidity is the number one because humidity feeds the biotoxins. It’s what sends the toxic stuff out into the air; it’s what’s making you sick. If you don’t control the humidity, there will be no fixing the problem. The key number here is less than 50% humidity. Ideally, significantly lower than that. To get humidity levels low, you may require an industrial dehumidifier, or two, depending on the size of your space.

Low-Humidity is imperative before moving forward because a humid space is a moldy space.

  1. Inline Air Filtration Filters: If you don’t already have them, try installing inline air filtration filters. MERV 7 to MERV 11 would be my suggestion. If you go too high of a MERV rating, it can cut down on the flow for your HVAC. A high MERV rating affects your air conditioning and heating within the home. You can install larger units (which are a little more expensive). However, the bigger size means you can get a higher MERV rating and still move quite a bit of air through your HVAC. We like Enviroklenz mobile air system.
  2. Mold toxicity: Detox the Home: once you’ve dehumidified, you want to clean the space (including the entire HVAC). Then you want to “fog” the space with a natural chemical to knock out the biotoxins and mold count. There are a few options. One effective spray is “Concrobium.” Concrobium is an over-the-counter natural chemical you can find at places like Home Depot. To do this properly, you need to seal up the house. Sealing the house creates negative air pressure. Next, spray the entire home as well as the whole HVAC system. Your best bet is to hire someone competent to do this properly. You don’t want to risk improperly detoxing your home and risking future problems.
  3. Re-test, and possibly evacuate. Unfortunately, getting rid of mold toxicity is not always possible. Even the most qualified company might not be able to fix a nasty mold problem. When building materials are very porous (like wood), the infestation can be profound. No amount of excavation, cleaning, and fogging will do. You have to understand that these toxins mostly make their way into everything. It can go from books to bedding, clothes, and furniture. If your mold problem is bad, you might have to genuinely get rid of everything, move, and start fresh. Taking beds, furniture, and other objects from a mold-infested home into a new home might bring those biotoxic spores with you. It might seem extreme, but having worked with so many clients whose health has been devastated by mold toxicity: it’s worth it.

Here’s one way to address mold before you take deeper or more drastic measures…

Because millions of people suffer from mold, but also allergies and sensitivities. They feel like their lives are a constant battle between their bodies and substances in the environment that trigger their symptoms. That’s why I’m so big on something called the EnviroKlenz®, which is an indoor air solution that kills bad bacteria (including mold) and also removes impurities from the air.  EnviroKlenz® is committed to air purification on TWO fronts – odors and toxins AND particulate matter – WITHOUT allowing harmful compounds or particulate matter to linger in the air.  And there are no fragrances, no toxic chemicals, and no additional compounds, ever.

EnviroKlenz® is relentless at removing particulate matter in the air like smoke, soot, and pollen too!  With its hospital-grade HEPA filter, it can remove at least 99.97% of fine particulate matter from the air in your home or business quickly and efficiently.
